Leader-friendly Gardening Practices

Much like a physical garden, some Leadership Gardens thrive while others merely survive.

An organic gardener uses eco-friendly gardening practices to grow a safe and healthy garden. A Leadership Gardener must employ the same good organic gardening practices to allow the human garden to flourish.

At the heart of a thriving Leadership Garden are six-leader friendly gardening practices:

  1. Be nonjudgmental. Forcing your opinions or personal values on others is toxic to the growth of your Leadership Gardens. Being nonjudgmental connects you to others with love and appreciation for who they are.
  2. Do not enable. Suspending judgment by separating the behavior from the person, allows loving thoughts and communication about acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, without being self-righteous and enabling.
  3. Use empathy. To practice empathy you need to be responsible for your own thoughts and feelings, suspend judgment, and give up “being right” for the moment. Empathy is a bridge from survival to thriving leadership and is the most powerful way to interact with others.
  4. Prune gossip. On the surface, gossip seems like a harmless form of entertainment, due to a lack of anything better to talk about. The true underbelly of gossip is that it diminishes your personal power and trust with others.
  5. Eliminate blame. Blame is a more severe for of gossip and a way to deflect personal responsibility for your life.
  6. Eradicate victimization. Victimization is a form of survival leadership that robs you of the opportunity to be in control of, and responsible for, how you experience life.

Consistent with those practices, an outgrowth of the Leadership Garden Legacy is to provide Cultivation Grants to Registry members for "Practice Projects" in these six categories:

  • Inclusion Projects - Be nonjudgmental
  • Safe and Healthy Community Projects – Do not enable
  • Compassion Projects – Use empathy
  • Kindness projects – Prune gossip
  • Accountability projects – Eliminate blame
  • Healing Projects – Eradicate Victimization

Please take this opportunity to become a member of the Leadership Garden Registry and help grow a thriving worldwide future.
