Training for Leadership Skills
Most people think leadership is the task of guiding or directing others and the ability to plan and organize. While these are facets of leadership, there are aspects that have more to do with you than your ability to work with others. Before one can concern themselves with traditional training for leadership skills, it is important to understand that effective leadership qualities include:
Integrity — Having such a sense of one’s values and you stick to them even if you’re alone. People will know you for your honesty and ability to make the hard choices that align with your values.
Self -awareness – You are able to delve deeper into a feeling or thought and learn from your mistakes. In addition, when you see how your actions, whether purposeful or accidental, are putting people off, you have the willingness and confidence to make adjustments.
Empathy — Being able to put yourself in another person’s place, so that you can understand how they feel. It does not mean to allow others to make excuses for their actions, but that you can find a way to understand their actions by seeing things from their perspective.
Perseverance — The ability to stick to something for the long haul. This does not mean you are stubborn or don’t know when to give up a certain approach, rather you know how to stick to what is working and adjust want is not.
Communication — You have a way with words, and can accurately communicate your vision to others in a way that you can all meet your goals. Remember that communication is a two-way street. It involves listening to what others tell you as well as communicating in words that they understand.
If you, or anyone in your group, are short on any of these qualities then that is the type of training you should seek. Getting leadership training only in planning, leading, and organizing skills will not truly benefit you if you don’t possess the skills above. With desire, anyone can practice these qualities and improve their leadership skills.
Training for leadership skills that do nothing to explain and expand on these qualities will be fruitless. The ability to elicit trust and confidence in others is important for all leaders, and the best way to elicit this is by leading yourself. It’s also important to allow others to express their leadership. If you can do that, you can do anything.
